Faresmaathoda Airport to officially open on February 15

Ministry of National Planning, Housing, and Infrastructure has revealed that the airport developed in Faresmaathoda, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, will be officially opened on February 15.

Faresmaathoda Airport is being developed to cater to domestic flights. Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) was contracted to complete the project at a cost of about USD10 million. The project involved the development of a 1,200m runway, taxiway and apron, along with the construction of a terminal building and fire building.

MTCC has completed the development of the airport and is currently completing the practical work prior to its opening. As such, the company is preparing the airport for the test flight and has finished testing the radar at the air traffic control tower and the runway lighting system. Finishing work is also being done at the terminal, which is designed to look appealing with a modern aesthetic, in contrast to other domestic airports in the Maldives.

The airport was developed after reclaiming land in islands near Faresmaathoda. The project began in 2021 and aims to improve the travel system in the southern region and pave the way for the development of local businesses and increase job opportunities.
