The High Court of the Maldives has ruled against Bank of Maldives (BML) in the case to appeal the request from Information commissioner's Office (iCOM) to disclose information on the salary of senior bank employees under the Right to Information Act.
An individual named Ahmed Aiman requested information on the salary of BML board members and senior employees in 2020. BML had refused to abide by the request, after which Aiman filed a complaint to iCOM, which ordered the bank to disclose the information.
BML filed a case at the High Court to appeal the decision of iCOM. The High Court has since ruled that any institution with the majority of shares held by the government can be considered state-owned company under the Right to Information Act. As such, the court stated that BML would be required to obey the law and Aiman has the right to receive the requested information.
