Women's empowerment study results to be announced in April

A study has been launched to provide more opportunities for women to be empowered in the Maldives.

The study is being conducted in collaboration with Women and Democracy and Women on Boards. The study is financially supported by the National Democratic Institute (NDI). The study will look at increasing the number of women in executive positions and empowering women's development organisations. The study will also look at ensuring women's economic empowerment and facilitating access to finance for women entrepreneurs.

Additionally, the study will collect data from 14 government agencies and estimate statistics based on the data. These include the President's Office, various ministries, courts, and the Local Government Authority (LGA). The results of the study will be shared with relevant government institutions, the private sector, and civil society organisations in April.

The status of women in Maldivian society has undergone vast improvements. The role of women in the workplace and elsewhere is expanding. The 2021 Global Gender Gap Index showed that class discrimination in education has been eliminated in the Maldives. The proportion of class discrimination in the health sector has been also reduced. However, the report shows that class differences in the political and economic sectors are still wide.
