Gov't seeks finance to upgrade classification of Madivaru Airport

The government has announced that it is seeking finance to upgrade Madivaru Airport in Lhaviyani Atoll to international standards on a cross-subsidy basis.

In a directive, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih announced plans to upgrade Madivaru Airport on a cross-subsidy basis. He has set a minimum financing of USD5 million for the project.

Madivaru Airport was officially opened in February 2022 and is being operated by Island Aviation Services Limited (IASL). The airport was developed with a 1,200m runway, aircraft parking area, fire building, and a modern terminal with an 80-passenger VIP lounge.

The government has also announced that it is seeking finance to upgrade the Kadhdhoo Airport to international standards on a cross-subsidy basis. Cross-subsidised projects are designated by the government to be implemented under an economic policy for the general benefit of the state.
