Vice President Faisal Naseem has inaugurated the Maldives Institute of Local Governance. He also launched the website of the institution at the ceremony.
The Maldives Institute of Local Governance was established under the Local Government Authority (LGA) and is tasked with conducting the necessary training programmes to produce competent individuals needed to cater to the growth of the decentralised administration system.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla highlighted the significance of the Decentralisation Act ratified in 2010 and said that the administration has introduced amendments to empower local councils. He said that these efforts have resulted in local councils assisting the government in speeding up developmental initiatives.
Additionally, Minister Imran said that local councils need skilled individuals and that the Maldives Institute of Local Governance is the first step towards building a skilled young generation for governance. He also highlighted that the LGA has trained 1,574 individuals last year.
At the ceremony, LGA revealed its three-year strategic plan, and partnership agreements were signed between the Maldives Institute of Local Governance and other institutions.
