Authorities inspect Faresmaathoda Airport prior to opening

Authorities have begun inspections as part of the final preparations prior to opening Faresmaathoda Airport.

Speaking to journalists after observing the project site, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) Adam Azim said all infrastructural work have been completed and a fire truck will soon be transported to the airport. He said the inspections will evaluate the operational readiness of the airport.

Inspections are being conducted by the technical team of MTCC as well as officials from the Ministry of National Planning, Housing, and Infrastructure, Maldives Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), Directorate of Aviation (DACA), Regional Airports Company Limited, Island Aviation Services Limited (IASL).

MTCC completed the development of the Faresmaathoda Airport at a cost of USD10 million. The project involved the development of a 1,200m runway, taxiway and apron, along with the construction of a terminal building and fire building. The airport was developed after reclaiming land in islands near Faresmaathoda. The project began in 2021 and aims to improve the travel system in the southern region and pave the way for the development of local businesses and increase job opportunities.
