MTCC awarded shore protection project in Maaungoodhoo

Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure has contracted the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) to undertake the shore protection project in Maaungoodhoo, Shaviyani Atoll. The agreement was signed by the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of MTCC Shahid Hussain Moosa and Zeeniya Ahmed Hameed, the Permanent Secretary of the planning ministry.

Under the project, a 450m revetment will be installed to protect the eroding area of the island. MTCC said the cost of the project is USD6 million and is expected to be completed within 120 days.

Speaking about the current condition of the erosion, Vice President of Maaungoodhoo Council Moosa Hassan said that erosion has always been a major issue for the island. He said the problem surfaced in 1997 after the development of the harbour. In addition, he said the residents appreciate the government's efforts to solve the problem.
