Road to be built connecting Faresmaathoda to airport

The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has stated that a road will be built to connect the airport to Faresmaathoda, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll. The government is preparing to officially open Faresmaathoda Airport on March 15. However, MTCC is yet to build the bridge connecting the airport and the island.

Speaking to PSM News, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Adam Azim said the delay was caused by the team having to erect larger bridge pillars than originally planned. He assured that a road is being built to provide easy access to the airport. He also noted that a harbour has been built for travellers to arrive at the airport from other islands. MTCC has stated that the bridge will be built by May.

Meanwhile, authorities have begun inspections as part of the final preparations prior to opening Faresmaathoda Airport. The inspections will evaluate the operational readiness of the airport.

MTCC completed the development of the Faresmaathoda Airport at a cost of USD10 million. The project involved the development of a 1,200m runway, a taxiway, and an apron, along with the construction of a terminal building and a fire building. The airport was developed after reclaiming land near Faresmaathoda. The project began in 2021 and aims to improve the transport system in the southern region and pave the way for the development of local businesses and increase job opportunities.
