Gov’t aims to improve Islamic finance in Maldives

Minister of Finance Ibrahim Ameer has stated that the government aims to improve the Islamic financial system in the Maldives. He made the remark after inaugurating the International Conference for Islamic Economics (ICONIE 2023).

Speaking at the function, Minister Ameer highlighted the importance of implementing scientific research from different fields to formulate economic policies. He noted the prevalence of Islamic finance across the globe and said the government aims to develop the Islamic financial system in the Maldives and train professionals for the sector.

ICONIE 2023 is organised by the Islamic University of Maldives (IUM) in collaboration with the International Research Centre of Islamic Economics and Finance, and Malaysia-based INCEIF University and Kolej University Islam Antarabangsa Selangor. The ultimate objective of this conference is to promote Islamic economics as a solution for socio-economic issues.

The conference includes keynote addresses, forums, and panel discussions on topics such as Adl and Ihsan in Islamic Economics and The Way Forward with Islamic Banking. Speakers include Vice Chancellor of IUM Dr. Ibrahim Zakariyya Moosa, Professor Dr. Aishath Muneeza, and Rector of Kolej University Selangor Dr. Farid Ravi Abdullah.
