Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology has decided to include the waste disposal bill of Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) in the utility bill of State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) from April.
WAMCO stated that waste is collected from more than 53,000 households in the Greater Male' Region, but only 20,000 households pay regular fees. The environment ministry said the company's cash flow is hampered due to non-payment of waste disposal bills. The increased costs to address the issue pose major challenges to regular waste collection and management.
Therefore, in a statement, the environment ministry said the waste disposal bill will be consolidated into the utility bill of STELCO from April 1. There will be no change in the waste collection fee and households already registered to WAMCO will not have to re-register for waste collection. However, it will not include the removal of large waste from households.
