Gov't notes WHO enabled Maldives to achieve a healthy society

The government has noted the close partnership with the World Health Organisation (WHO) over the past five decades has enabled Maldives to achieve great strides in health outcomes, and a healthy society. The statement was made by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid in his message to Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on the occasion of World Health Day, which also marks the 75th anniversary of WHO.

In his message, Minister Shahid said the milestone presents another opportunity to reflect on the achievements and progress made in the past seven decades. He said it gives the chance to boost investment toward addressing the core global health challenges. He also said it gives the opportunity to weigh up on what more can be done to realise the vision and make access to quality health care a reality for all.

Furthermore, Minister Shahid said the Maldives has enjoyed a long, fruitful, and prosperous relationship with the WHO. As such, the minister noted that the WHO was the first United Nations (UN) agency to open an office in the Maldives in February 1965, having been active in the country even prior to independence. He said the close partnership over the past five decades has enabled the Maldives to achieve great strides in health outcomes and a healthy society. He expressed immense gratitude for the support provided by WHO over the years. He also mentioned the support from WHO in tackling the COVID-19 pandemic was invaluable, including strengthening the national health system and mobilising resources for future pandemic preparedness.
