Gov't awards shore protection project in Thulusdhoo

Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure has contracted Heavy Force Private Limited to undertake the shore protection project in Thulusdhoo, Kaafu Atoll. The agreement was signed by the Director General of the Planning Ministry Fathimath Shaana Farooq and the Managing Director of Heavy Force Ibrahim Zameer.

Under the project, six 70m breakwaters, two 50m groynes, and 170m revetment will be installed to protect the eroding area of the island. The project will also enrich the beach of the island with sand. The government said that the cost of the project is USD2.3 million and is expected to be completed within four months.

Speaking to PSM News, the President of Thulusdhoo Island Council Aslam Moosa said that there is an erosion of about 75ft from the east side of the island. As such, he said that some of the old trees in the area have also been destroyed due to erosion. In addition, he said that there are also a number of guesthouses close to the area that might get affected by erosion.
