Gov’t seeks public opinion on Makunudhoo Airport design

The Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure has sent the design documents of the Makunudhoo Airport to the island council to seek public opinion.

Makunudhoo in Haa Dhaalu Atoll is located on the western edge of the Maldives and residents have expressed concern over the inadequate means of travel from the island. In order to solve this issue, the government is preparing to develop an airport on the island. The project is part of the government's pledge to have airports accessible within 30 minutes of travel by speedboat from every inhabited island.

Makunudhoo Airport is to be developed with a 1,500m runway on a land plot that will be reclaimed on the southern side of the island. The council stated that it will obtain public opinion on the design of the airport and sent it to the ministry soon, adding that residents are greatly expecting the completion of the airport, which will significantly ease travel costs.

The development of the airport is also expected to increase local economic opportunities and expand the local tourism industry. The council stated that two guesthouses are currently operating in Makunudhoo and more businesses have expressed interest in opening businesses.
