Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology Aminath Shauna has said that there is no intention of waiving the fine of USD4.5 million imposed on Afcons Infrastructure Limited for the damages to the Villimale’ reef caused by a bridge construction platform.
The platform ran aground on Villimale’ on August 16, 2022, and caused damage to the reef after its anchor became embedded in the sea floor. The platform was removed from the area on August 27, 2022. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) imposed a fine of USD4.5 million on the India-based company under the Environmental Protection and Conservation Act and its regulations.
Speaking at the Parliament, Minister Shauna said that Afcons had appealed the fines imposed by EPA. She said that the company is moving forward with the appeal process. She, however, affirmed that the government has no intention of waiving the fine.
Additionally, Minister Shauna said the government has imposed fines of more than USD38.9 million in 40 cases of violation of EPA standards during the past four years. She also said the government is working to ensure the safety of the environment and hold those who act against the law accountable.
After taking into account the EPA's assessment report and the report submitted by the platform owner, the EPA said that the platform parts and the removal efforts have caused various damage to the reef in different parts of the area. The EPA said an area of 2,755 acres was damaged leaving large holes 10ft deep.
