The President's Scholarship and High Achievers' Scholarship have been conferred to 155 recipients in the General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level examinations in 2022. A total of 17 students were awarded President's Scholarship and 138 students were awarded the High Achievers' Scholarship during a special ceremony.
The aim of the scholarships is to encourage students to study and achieve good results in the higher secondary level examinations. The scholarships also offer the opportunity to study in any field internationally.
At the award ceremony, President Solih presented President's Scholarship award letters to 17 students who attained the highest results in the GCE Advanced Level examinations. First Lady Fazna Ahmed presented scholarship award letters to 18 of the 138 High Achievers' Scholarship recipients, while the remaining certificates were handed over by government ministers.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Higher Education Dr. Ibrahim Hassan said the number of students achieving the prestigious scholarships has increased threefold this year. He said the government is making efforts to provide educational opportunities to Maldivian students seeking to study abroad. In addition, he said that Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Centres have been established in different parts of the country to provide higher education in the islands.
The scholarships are awarded to students who have obtained an A* in five subjects including Islam and Dhivehi language. They also include students who have obtained a C grade or above in the English language in the GCE Advanced Level examination or an equivalent examination. Students must make use of the opportunity within the next 18 months, according to the stipulated rules of the scholarship.
