The Ministry of Gender, Family, and Social Services has announced plans to establish the first Social Home for Elderly Persons in the atolls, specifically in Addu City.
Speaking to PSM News, the Director General at the Gender Ministry, Akram Hussain, the selection of locations for these facilities is based on the prevalence of reported domestic abuse cases. By expanding services in areas with higher rates of domestic violence, the ministry aims to address the needs of vulnerable elderly individuals. Over the past five years, more than 500 cases of elderly abuse have been reported, with a higher concentration in Male' and other densely populated regions.
Furthermore, a land plot has been designated in Feydhoo to establish an elderly center. The ministry's focus is on areas where various forms of violence against senior citizens are commonly reported, as well as islands with convenient access to healthcare services and transportation.
The establishment of social centers dedicated to the elderly is a key objective outlined in the Strategic Action Plan of the current administration. The primary goal of the Social Home for Elderly Persons is to promote respect and dignity for the elderly while providing crucial social support. These centers will encourage the active participation of older adults in society and help prepare them for a fulfilling and healthy old age.
