Gov't says compensations not approved for terminated agreements

The President’s Office has stated that compensation has not been decided to be provided to various parties for damages resulting from the unlawful termination of agreements by the previous administration.

During a press conference, the Spokesperson at the President's Office Miuvaan Mohamed said the government appointed a special committee on January 27, 2019, to advise on the settlement of cases filed against the state in court and to provide compensation in a way that does not place a financial burden on the state. In addition, he said that the deadline for submitting complaints from various parties has expired. He said that from the 34 cases that have been submitted to the committee for compensation, most of the cases filed so far have not been heard or have been decided out of court.

Furthermore, Miuvaan said the committee will decide on the cases by August. He said a detailed report on the work of the committee will also be submitted, adding the committee has not decided to pay compensation to any individual yet.

Government officials have expressed the view that action should be taken against officials from the previous administration responsible for negligence, as the state is required to pay substantial sums of money as compensation to various parties. Additionally, the Ministry of Finance has highlighted that numerous agreements were unlawfully terminated by the previous administration resulting in the failure to make payments for several projects.
