President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has underscored the pivotal role of developmental projects, job creation, and human resources development in driving national progress. He made the remarks during the momentous inauguration of the newly upgraded harbour in Dharanboodhoo, Faafu Atoll. He was accompanied by First Lady Fazna Ahmed, cabinet ministers, parliamentarians, senior government officials, as well as the staff of government offices, institutions, and members of the residential community.
During his speech, President Solih expressed his vision for a transformative future, drawing attention to the congestion issues plaguing Malé City, which he attributed to previous policies that concentrated essential services and employment opportunities in the capital. Concerned about the deteriorating conditions in Malé, President Solih stressed the importance of developing other regions to improve livability and provide viable alternatives.
Moreover, President Solih highlighted the administration's commitment to simultaneously developing human resources alongside infrastructure projects to meet the increasing demands of the nation. He underscored the critical significance of continuous investment in human resource development as a key driver of sustainable national progress. He also acknowledged that the lack of employment opportunities and income sources on the islands had historically driven migration trends toward Malé.
Celebrating the achievements of 36 island residents who successfully obtained their degrees through the administration's free degree programme, President Solih expressed optimism for a promising future for Dharanboodhoo. He emphasised the importance of retaining skilled individuals on the island to spearhead its developmental prospects. Acknowledging the administration's substantial progress in fulfilling commitments to Dharanboodhoo, he also urged residents to communicate any additional requirements or requests, as the island community may still have unmet needs.
The contract for the development of Dharanboodhoo Harbour was awarded to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) at a cost of USD2.97 million.
