Maldives is exemplary in overcoming COVID-19: President

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has revealed Maldives was exemplary in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, setting an example for other countries. The statement was made during the inauguration ceremony of a new powerhouse in Bilehdhoo, Faafu Atoll.

Speaking at the ceremony, President Solih highlighted that the Fenaka Corporation Limited has successfully addressed electricity issues faced by residents since 1980 by constructing a powerhouse equipped with two generators of 400kW and 500kW. He emphasised that Fenaka has constructed 48 new powerhouses and 61 administrative buildings across the country, with an additional 28 powerhouse development projects currently in progress.

In addition, President Solih announced plans to establish an ATM service centre in Bilehdhoo in July, as well as upcoming land reclamation and harbor development projects. He emphasized that these initiatives would create increased business investment opportunities for the residential community in the near future. President Solih stressed that by completing essential infrastructure projects such as electricity, water, and sewage systems, the island's residents would experience enhanced prospects for income generation and investment. He also mentioned the potential economic benefits of constructing an airport on the neighboring island of Magoodhoo. The president encouraged the local community to explore guesthouse establishment as a viable business opportunity and provided details on the financial support and loans available through the administration for such ventures. He emphasized the importance of effective management of additional tasks associated with operating the airport to maximize its potential benefits.

Furthermore, President Solih highlighted the administration's ability to continue development projects despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. He cited conversations with a Sri Lankan minister who acknowledged the mistake of halting development projects in their country, while the Maldives proceeded after adhering to the recommendations of health experts. He also mentioned that the President of Seychelles implemented measures inspired by the Maldives, leading to improvements in their own country during the pandemic.

After the inauguration, President Solih and First Lady Fazna Ahmed visited Bilehdhoo School, where they inaugurated a newly constructed multi-purpose hall. It marks the completion of the 15th multi-purpose hall by the current administration during its term. The government is actively involved in 247 projects aimed at enhancing the infrastructure of the education sector nationwide, including the construction of 1,716 classrooms, 92 multi-purpose halls, and 563 other structures.
