Gov't to introduce CT scan services at Fuvahmulah Hospital

The Ministry of Health has begun preparations to introduce computerized tomography (CT) scan and mammography services at Fuvahmulah Hospital. The ministry contracted Econ Maldives Private Limited to construct a new building to introduce the services.

CT scan and mammography are one of the most urgently needed services to expand the healthcare sector in Fuvahmulah City. As such, the health ministry contracted Econ Maldives to construct the new building to begin CT scan and mammography services at the hospital, make some changes to the building and increase the space. The company is tasked to complete the project within 100 days at a cost of USD188,067.

Speaking to PSM News about the project, the Manager at Fuvahmulah Hospital Mohamed Lirar said that accidents and strokes require urgent CT scans. He, however, said that a total of 75 cases have been referred to the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) and Addu Equatorial Hospital (AEH) from January to May 29 due to the lack of CT scan service.

Fuvahmulah Hospital is working to train and recruit more staff by the time the building is completed to start the services. Currently, there are two radiology staff and it is not optimal to provide a good standard of service in a hospital open 24hrs. The hospital also requested that patients be treated in Addu City or Male' City under the referral system for services that cannot be provided while the construction is underway.
