The Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure has stated that it has yet to receive the plan for the Sinamale’ Redevelopment Project.
Male’ City Council has announced its decision to demolish Sinamale’ flats and hire a contractor to redevelop the buildings. The existing buildings are now more than 30 years old and consist of 128 apartments, which have sustained damages due to poor maintenance. To address the issue, the city council decided to commence the redevelopment project after the residents are provided with a new place to live.
The Maldives Building Act dictates that the relevant documents such as the plan and concept be submitted to the relevant ministry prior to the commencement of a building construction project. However, Minister of State for Planning, Housing and Infrastructure Akram Kamludeen said that the Male’ City Council has not yet submitted the documents.
In response, Mayor Mohamed Muizzu said that the city council has been informing the government of the project for some time. He also said that the city council is in the process of relocating the residents and assured that the redeveloped Sinamale’ flats would be more spacious than the current apartments.
The Sinamale’ Redevelopment Project consists of the development of 1,500 apartments. As such, a five-storey building with 700 apartments will be built in the first phase and a five-storey building with 800 apartments will be built in the second phase. The buildings will consist of two-room, three-room, and four-room apartments with the ground floor dedicated to commercial units and a parking zone in the basement.
