Urbanco has completed the development of a new prison in Himmafushi, Kaafu Atoll.
The project to develop a prison in Himmafushi was undertaken by the Community Rapid Response (CRR) team from Urbanco at the request of the President's Office. The project was prompted by the government's decision to vacate Male' Prison before the completion of the newly developed Dharumavantha School in the area. As such, a dilapidated building in Himmafushi was redeveloped as a prison under the project.
Urbanco stated that the prison consists of four blocks, each with a capacity to accommodate 16 inmates and a bathroom area comprising of 12 toilets. The prison has been handed over to the Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) after the completion of the main building structure, all renovation works, and electric wiring.
Although the main objective of Urbanco is the development of Hulhumale’ and the provision of basic services required for the region, its CRR team is undertaking projects in the interest of the general community under its Beyond Hulhumale’ plan. In addition to the prison in Himmafushi, the state-owned company is also working on setting up a special decompression chamber for divers in Thinadhoo, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll.
