The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in the Maldives has handed over post-COVID care equipment to the Ministry of Health with the support of the government of China.
The equipment was handed under the China-UNDP Triangular Cooperation Response to COVID-19 in the Asia and Pacific Region. The equipment will further strengthen the frontline healthcare systems in the Maldives, improve the country’s capacity to treat cases of COVID-19, and enhance the support of intensive care treatment for other respiratory and life-threatening illnesses.
Over 4000 pairs of gloves, 16 Automated External Defibrillators (AED), and 10 neonatal ventilators were donated to the Maldives. The equipment will allow them to continue their work in post-COVID care while preventing further spread of the disease safely and effectively.
The equipment was handed over to Minister of Health Ahmed Naseem by Ambassador of China to the Maldives Wang Lixin and Deputy Resident Representative of UNDP in the Maldives Vera Hakim during a special ceremony.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Minister Naseem, highlighted that the Maldives is a nation dependent on the importation of medicine and medical and personal protective equipment (PPEs) and that the country appreciates donations of these items. He also said that the benefits of the donation will build the capacity of health facilities in 10 atolls.
Meanwhile, Ambassador Lixin said that China is willing to expand cooperation in the field of health to bring more tangible benefits to the citizens of the Maldives. She also said that they are prepared to further carry out tripartite cooperation with UNDP to implement Global Development Initiative and promote the sustainable social and economic development of the Maldives.
Moreover, Deputy Resident Representative Vera alluded to how the China-UNDP project in service of the Maldives embodies the spirit of collaboration and unity in addressing the challenges imposed by health crises and empowers the government, medical personnel, and the public to respond effectively to pandemic situations.
