Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has commenced the development of roads in Ukulhas, Alifu Alifu Atoll.
MTCC is currently carrying out the side works for the road development project, which includes the installation of the storm water drainage system. The scope of the project includes the laying of asphalt on the roads spanning 2.68km, which include all the main roads in Ukulhas and the installation of streetlights. MTCC is tasked with completing the project within 450 days at a cost of USD3.8 million.
President of Ukulhas Island Council Shaukath Ibrahim said that the roads and houses are prone to flooding during the rainy season. He said that the rainwater is collected from the island and discharged into the ocean. He, however, said that collecting water in such a way not a long term solution to a major problem.
Ukulhas has a registered population of 1,100 residents. However, the population increased to 2,000 with the island's engagement with tourism and industrial activities. The poor state of the roads are a great concern to the residents of the island. As such, the the government awarded the contract to MTCC to take on the project last year.
