Around 28,000 students enroll in Grade 1 in Male’

Minister of Education has revealed that around 28,000 students have been enrolled in Grade 1 in the Greater Male’ Region.

Speaking to PSM News, Deputy Minister of Education Mohamed Ihsan said that 28,000 students have been enrolled in Grade 1 in Male’ City, Hulhumale’, and Villimale’. Around 1,400 students were registered for Grade 1 at schools in Male’ City, 790 students were registered in Hulhumale’, and 86 students were registered in Villimale’. In addition, 500 students were registered at the newly developed Salahuddin School in Hulhumale’ Phase II.

Additionally, Deputy Minister Ihsan said that the ministry has opened the opportunity for parents to re-register their children to different schools via its portal and that students in the atolls have also been informed of their registration status. The ministry
enrolled students in the nearest schools to their location, aiming to facilitate easier transportation for parents accompanying their children to school.

Furthermore, Deputy Minister Ihsan emphasised that the recruitment of local school teachers remains the ministry's highest priority. In line with its policy, the ministry seeks to hire expatriate teachers only when there is a lack of qualified Maldivian applicants following job announcements. He highlighted that the number of expatriate teachers has been decreasing annually.
