President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has inaugurated the shore protection project and the clean water supply network project in Kolhufushi, Meemu Atoll.
Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure contracted MTCC to conduct the shore protection project in November 2021. Under the project, MTCC constructed a 137m revetment on the northeast shores of Kolhufushi, and another 382m revetment on the southern shores of the island. The state-owned company is also constructed two breakwaters and carried out beach replenishment on the eroded areas of the island. In addition, two 30m x 60m areas were developed as public swimming areas.
Furthermore, the water supply network project was funded with USD3 million from the line-of-credit provided by the EXIM Bank of India. Under the project, India-based SMC Infrastructure Private Limited established a water collection tank and storage tank as well as a reverse osmosis (RO) plant. The company also constructed an administrative building with a laboratory which can be used for water analysis. The company also installed water pipes and water metres in households and other buildings.
