The government has revealed that the construction of the hospital in Thulhaadhoo, Baa Atoll, has officially commenced.
The ceremony was attended by Minister of Health Ahmed Naseem, Parliamentarian Hisaan Hussain, Chief Executive Officer at Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) Adam Azim, representatives from the health ministry, as well as other distinguished state dignitaries.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Naseem commended the government's dedicated endeavors in enhancing the health system. He further emphasised that the hospital in Thulhaadhoo will serve as a convenient and accessible healthcare facility for nearby islands and resorts.
Meanwhile, Senior Administrator at the health centre in Thulhaadhoo Ahmed Rasheed expressed concerns about the considerable expenditure on health services, emphasising the community's eagerness for improved healthcare facilities. He also said the entire atoll will greatly benefit from enhanced medical services once such improvements are realised.
Moreover, Azim stated that the hospital construction will be completed within the agreed-upon time frame. He further acknowledged that MTCC has successfully finished the shore protection project on the island, thanks to the cooperation of the local residents.
The project awarded to MTCC by the health ministry is tasked to be completed in 18 months at a cost of over USD7.3 million. The scope of the project includes constructing a two-story hospital building with a capacity of 30 beds. The new hospital in Thulhaadhoo is part of a broader effort to improve access to quality healthcare across the islands.
