HPA confirms outbreak in Male' is norovirus

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has confirmed that the ongoing outbreak of vomiting and diarrhea in Male' is attributed to the highly contagious norovirus.

According to HPA, the increasing cases of vomiting and diarrhea in Male' are not linked to a particular food but is instead attributed to a fast-spreading virus, especially in enclosed or crowded settings. In response, HPA has advised the public to regularly wash hands with soap and water as a preventive measure against the virus, warning that hand sanitiser alone does not protect against the norovirus. Frequent handwashing remains a crucial step in curbing its spread.

In addition, HPA urged the public to be careful when cleaning areas contaminated by vomit and diarrhea. HPA advised to clean contaminated surfaces with tissue or paper towels and dispose them safely. It is advised to apply bleach on the surface for approximately five minutes before cleaning the area further with soap or a washing solution. Individuals who experience symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, and stomach pain, should refrain from food preparation or attending crowded places for a minimum of 24 hours after symptoms have subsided.

HPA also noted that a significant number of individuals, mostly children, have been admitted to various hospitals in Male' including Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), Senahiya Military Hospital, ADK Hospital, and Hulhumale' Hospital. HPA stated that additional arrangements have been made at hospitals to handle the situation effectively.
