Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has stated that a large part of the development of the harbour in Manadhoo, Noonu Atoll, has been completed.
According to MTCC, the channel breakwater operations and ramp construction have been successfully completed. As of now, the project has reached an overall progress rate of 55%.
Speaking to PSM News, President of Manadhoo Island Council Abdul Rahman Sabeeh shed light on the harbour's vital role for the residents of the atoll. He acknowledged that the harbour poses considerable challenges, especially during bad weather, impacting its usability. He acknowledged the commitment to address these concerns by undertaking the development of the harbour, which addresses the requests and needs of citizens.
The contract to develop the harbour was awarded to MTCC in October 2021. As part of the project, the entrance to the harbour will be demolished in the current location and transferred to the west side of the harbour. The project also includes dredging and excavation operations of 29,038cbm, construction of a 195m breakwater, a 188m revetment, a concrete bridge, a ramp, and installation of navigational aids. The project is valued at USD1.8 million.
Manadhoo has a registered population of 2,000. However, the population of the island exceeds 3,000 with people migrating to the island for various purposes. Manadhoo, which has a wide range of public services established, has a large number of people visiting the island each day. The harbour is one of the most challenging ports to use during bad weather, according to the residents and visitors.
