Ungoofaaru Hospital begins heart treatment services

Ungoofaaru Regional Hospital has commenced special heart disease treatment services. It marks the first time the hospital in Raa Atoll is offering a sub-specialist service. As such, a cardiologist has joined the hospital to lead the launch of the new service.

Speaking to PSM News, Senior Customer Relations Officer at Ungoofaaru Regional Hospital Hassan Fazeel expressed that the service is a historic milestone for the hospital. He emphasised that the launch of such a specialised service is a significant advancement for the facility. He also highlighted that the new service will offer added convenience to the residents in the region.

Additionally, Fazeel highlighted that 30 patients had to be sent to Male' City for heart disease treatment last year, emphasising the critical need for the service at Ungoofaaru Hospital. He said appointment slots have been fully booked with the recent launch of the service. He also said the significant proportion of appointment requests coming from different atolls further underscores the widespread need and demand for the service.

Ungoofaaru Regional Hospital has announced its plans to introduce additional new services at the facility. The hospital is currently taking administrative steps to launch echocardiogram and MRI services. Additionally, it is in the process of acquiring the required resources to initiate trauma surgery services, while simultaneously working on administrative preparations for the commencement of laparoscopic surgery services. These developments aim to enhance medical offerings and improve healthcare access for the community.

Developing health facilities in the atolls is one of the highest priorities of the administration. The initiative aims to reduce the reliance on the Greater Male’ Region and allow atoll residents to receive medical treatment and healthcare services near their residential islands.
