Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has completed land reclamation of the area reclaimed under the Mathikomandoo Connectivity Project.
The project to connect Komandoo and Mathikomandoo with a 200m link started on July 2. Within 10 days of beginning, MTCC has completed the filling the reclaimed area with sand. As such, a total of 16.7 hectares of land has been reclaimed and 1,690m of shore protection rectification will be laid.
The Mathikomandoo Connectivity Project began in January last year. However, the project was delayed due to the conducting of further project surveys and problems with the dredger. However, MTCC brought in a new dredger, resulting in a significant acceleration of the project's progress.
The project was awarded to MTCC at a value of USD16.2 million. The project aims to alleviate the land shortage issue in Komandoo, which has halted housing development and socio-economic opportunities, resulting in many residents leaving the island. Komandoo spans nine hectares and consists of 1,900 registered residents, while only 600 currently live on the island. The government decided to provide a long-term solution to the issue by developing shore protection structures and reclaiming part of Mathikomandoo.
