MTCC mobilises Lhohi harbour development project

The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has mobilised the Harbour Development Project in Lhohi, Noonu Atoll.

MTCC is tasked with dredging 66,701cbm of the harbour and 2,205cbm of the channel, building a 40m breakwater, 95m revetment, and a 366m quay wall, 366m apron, 50m groynes and installing 10 mooring buoys. The scope of works also includes the installation of 1,720sqm harbour pavement, building a 121sqm ramp, a concrete jetty, and installing navigation and street lights. The state-owned company is tasked with completing the project within 640 days at a cost of over USD4.4 million.

Speaking to PSM News, President of Lhohi Island Council Ibrahim Mohamed mentioned that the harbour, which was constructed in 2008, has suffered irreparable damage. He highlighted that the deterioration of the harbor wall has resulted in challenges for the safe approach of boats to the harbor. Furthermore, he conveyed that the collapse of the harbor wall has rendered the area hazardous for public access. He also underscored the significant issue of docking boats during severe weather.

The government awarded the harbour development project in Lhohi to MTCC on December 29, 2022. Lhohi is renowned for fishing and local tourism, attracting many visitors to its harbour on a daily basis. Therefore, the expansion of the harbor is set to enhance its capacity, allowing boats to approach the jetty smoothly and without impediments.
