MTCC begins fieldwork to develop Lhohi harbour

The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company Limited (MTCC) has commenced the fieldwork of the harbour development project in Lhohi, Noonu Atoll.

MTCC stated that the existing harbour basin dredging operations are currently underway as part of the project. The scope of the project includes dredging 66,701cbm of the harbour and 2,205cbm of the channel, building a 40m breakwater, 95m revetment, and a 366m quay wall, 366m apron, 50m groynes and installing mooring buoys. The scope of works also includes the building of 1,720sqm harbour pavement, building a 121sqm ramp, a concrete jetty, and installing navigation and street lights. The state-owned company is tasked with completing the project within 640 days at a cost of over USD4.4 million.

The government awarded the harbour development project in Lhohi to MTCC on December 29, 2022. Lhohi has a population of 978 residents. The island is renowned for fishing and local tourism, attracting many visitors to its harbour on a daily basis. The expansion of the harbour is set to enhance its capacity, allowing boats to approach the jetty smoothly and without impediments.
