Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has revealed plans to establish Recovery Villages in three regions to conduct drug rehabilitation programmes during President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's second term. The statement was made by Dr. Aishath Safeena, Senior Social Policy Analyst at the President's Office, while providing information on the MDP manifesto in a special PSM programme.
Speaking on the programme, Dr. Safeena highlighted the efforts made to treat drug addicts during President Solih's current term. These include opening four rehabilitation centres and commencing three methadone maintenance programmes. She said that rehabilitation initiatives need to be expanded to allow individuals to receive treatment close to their homes.
As such, Dr. Safeena said that the MDP manifesto includes the establishment of Recovery Villages in three regions. She detailed that the centres will facilitate programmes to provide training and education for patients to receive an income after they are released. She also highlighted the importance of allowing drug addicts to spend time away from their community, which can be used to prepare them for reintegration.
The plans to treat drug addiction falls under the manifesto's policy of leaving no young person behind. The manifesto comprises five key policies, and MDP has been progressively unveiling these distinct policy components.
