Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure has contracted Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) to complete a reclamation project in Mathiveri, Alifu Alifu Atoll.
The agreement was signed by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MTCC Adam Azim and the Director General of the Planning Ministry Fathimath Shaana Farooq. MTCC is tasked with conducting a sand search survey and reclaiming 26.50 hectares of reclamation operations at a cost of USD9.3 million. The state-owned company will also build a 110m breakwater on the eastern side and a 54m revetment on the western side of the island.
Mathiveri has population of 1,000 residents and a land area of 20.9 hectares. The island has a thriving local tourism industry with 13 guesthouses. In addition, the government has established a clean water supply and sewerage network, which is part of the efforts to provide more opportunities to expand local tourism in the island.
