MTCC to reclaim land in Kolamaafushi

Ministry of National Planning, Housing, and Infrastructure has contracted Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) to reclaim land in Kolamaafushi in Gaafu Alifu Atoll and Madaveli in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll.

The agreement was signed by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MTCC Adam Azim and the Director General of the Planning Ministry Fathimath Shaana Farooq.

MTCC is tasked with reclaiming nine hectares in Kolamaafushi within 270 days for USD2.9 million. The scope of works include developing an 823m drainage bioswale.

Kolamaafushi has a population of 1,600 residents and is in need of more residential land plots. The council stated that many families are anticipating the allocation of more plots, as the last time plots were distributed was in 2006. The council added that the reclamation project would alleviate the housing issue for the next 50 years.

Furthermore, MTCC is tasked with reclaiming nine hectares in Madaveli within 390 days for USD5 million. The scope of works include developing a 450m drainage bioswale, 629m rockboulder revetment, and 678m geobag revetment.

Madaveli has a population of over 2,000 residents and a 50-hectare land area. Residents have been expressed concern over the lack of land plots for years. The completion of the reclamation project will allow the council to allocate land plots for businesses and residential use.
