Male' Water and Sewerage Company Limited (MWSC) has successfully completed testing and commissioning of the water and sewerage project in Maalhos, Baa Atoll.
The water and sewerage project in Maalhos was contracted to MWSC in December 2020 at a cost of USD3.9 million. Following the completion of the project, a team from the Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure, Fenaka Corporation Limited, and MWSC visited Maalhos to inspect the water supply and sewerage system and conduct the necessary tests.
As part of the project, the water supply system included the necessary infrastructure to accommodate the water plant, establishing the primary network of water pipelines, building a facility for reverse osmosis (RO) treatment, setting up RO plants, installing water tanks for water storage, and implementing household water metres and connections. In addition, the sewerage system involved laying out the primary sewerage network and pipeline, constructing pump stations, creating an outlet to the sea, and establishing connection points in households for junctions, all while providing comprehensive sewerage connections.
MWSC officially commenced the project in 2021 but has faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. MWSC has developed a 4.9km long water supply network and a 4.5km long sewerage network and established connections to 230 households under the project.
Maalhos has a population of 700 residents. The island have been long awaiting the completion of the project to boost the local tourism industry and access to clean and safe drinking water.
