Minister of Tourism Dr. Abdulla Mausoom has stated that the newly launched Maldives Tourism Climate Action Plan will bring major changes to the tourism industry.
Speaking at the launching ceremony, Minister Mausoom said the action plan will help develop the tourism industry in a sustainable manner by taking the country's environment into account. He also said that the Maldives should have a climate change mitigation plan for every sector, as a country at the forefront of advocating against climate change. He expressed hope that all the stakeholders in the tourism industry will work together to assist in the implementation of the plan.
The government developed the action plan with the assistance of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). It is the first such action plan to be implemented in the Maldives that concerns both the tourism industry and environmental issues. The action plan also takes into account the goals set in the Fifth Tourism Master Plan.
One of the main objectives of the Tourism Climate Action Plan is to make the Maldives one of the leading countries in finding innovative solutions against climate change. The plan outlines the possibilities and key measures to increase private and public sector investment in the sector.
