The government has established a blood bank at Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital (KRH) to enhance the accessibility of blood resources.
The newly established blood bank at KRH has the capacity to store up to 200 units of blood, making it a crucial asset for the facility's extensive range of medical procedures, including minor surgeries and operations on pregnant women. The initiative aims to alleviate the challenges associated with obtaining blood during emergency situations.
The blood bank also welcomes voluntary blood donors, facilitating the early storage of blood from individuals with rare blood types. In addition, KRH plans to reduce its stock of less frequently required blood groups while ensuring the safety of stored blood for a specified duration to minimise blood wastage.
Furthermore, KRH has significantly improved the service provided to child blood donors through the blood bank. The time required for transfusing blood from donors has been reduced from 12 hours to just four hours, enhancing efficiency and patient care.
KRH is one of the facilities operating in the Maldives which the northern islands widely depend on. The number of people seeking services from the hospital has been increasing significantly over the years.
