The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company Limited (MTCC) has begun the harbour development project in Uligan, Haa Alifu Atoll. The fieldwork was inaugurated by Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Adam Azim at a special ceremony.
In his speech, Azim said that MTCC tends to complete harbour development projects within 18 months and assured that the harbour in Uligan will be constructed according to the expectations of the residents. As such, he said that the harbour will be built to modern standards with a channel, quay wall, breakwater, ramp, pavement, and lights.
Also at the ceremony, President of Uligan Island Council Ahmed Muaz highlighted the natural beauty of the island which attracts tourists. He also noted that the harbour has greatly deteriorated since its development was abandoned 15 years ago.
In July, the Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure contracted MTCC to complete the shore protection and harbour expansion project in Uligan. As part of the project, MTCC is tasked with dredging 10,400cbm of the harbour, 46,000cbm of the new part of the harbour, and 22,000cbm of the channel. The scope of works also includes sand-filling operations, and construction of the breakwater, revetment, and harbour pavement. The company is expected to complete the projects within 600 days at a cost of USD5 million.
Uligan has a population of 550 residents and is notable for its local tourism and agricultural industry. The island sees many visitors seeking essential services and is facing challenges due to the undeveloped harbour. However, residents have expressed satisfaction in seeing fieldwork begin for the development of the harbour, as they have been greatly expecting the project for years. The council stated that the completion of the harbour will significantly alleviate the challenges faced by residents.
