Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has mobilised the site for the construction of the causeway connecting Dhanbidhoo and Kalaidhoo in Laamu Atoll.
The government awarded the contract to MTCC on January 22, 2023 to connect four islands in Laamu Atoll with a causeway. The initiative is being carried out in two separate projects, which include building causeways connecting Hithadhoo and Kunahandhoo as well as Dhanbidhoo and Kalaidhoo.
MTCC is now preparing to start the project of connecting Kalaidhoo and Dhanbidhoo with a causeway. The project site has now been mobilised with the machinery and equipment required for the project. The scope of the project includes 42,600cbm channel dredging operations, 271m revetment, 752m apron, 315m bridge, 714m retaining wall, 7,266sqm carriageway, and installation of streetlights. The value of the project is USD9.4 million.
Kalaidhoo has a population of over 1,000 residents and is connected by land to Isdhoo. Dhanbidhoo also has a population of over 1,000 residents and both islands are notable for their historical significance. The connection of the two islands will facilitate the union of more than 3,500 individuals residing across three islands, including Isdhoo. It will also bring convenience to the residents, with the government anticipating economic and social enhancements as a result of the initiative.
