President-elect vows to build mentally healthy society

President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has vowed to formulate policies to build a mentally healthy society.

In a statement on World Mental Health Day, President-elect Muizzu said every citizen has a basic right to live a mentally healthy life. As such, he pledged to build a healthier society and provide easier access to mental health treatment.

World Mental Health Day is marked on October 10 every year. The overall objective of World Mental Health Day is to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and to mobilise efforts in support of mental health. The Day provides an opportunity for all stakeholders working on mental health issues to talk about their work, and what more needs to be done to make mental health care a reality for people worldwide.

The theme for World Mental Health Day 2023 is Mental Health is a Universal Human Right. The World Health Organisation (WHO) stated that good mental health is crucial for overall well-being, but one in eight people globally live with mental health conditions, affecting various aspects of their lives. In addition, those with mental health conditions often face human rights violations and discrimination.
