Addu City Council to use reclaimed area for economic development

Addu City Council has announced ongoing preparations for the delivery of the land use plan for the reclaimed areas, with a specific focus on fostering economic opportunities in the development of land in Addu.

The Addu City land reclamation project is the largest development project ever undertaken in Addu. A total of 228 hectares of land have been successfully reclaimed, addressing critical housing challenges. The project was entrusted to Van Oord India Private Limited and the Maldives Transport Contracting Company (MTCC). Van Oord India handled the reclamation in Hithadhoo, Maradhoo, and Maradhoo-Feydhoo, while MTCC undertook the project in Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo. The USD103 million initiative aims not only to provide a housing solution but also to generate additional economic opportunities for the region.

Van Oord India reclaimed 80 hectares in Hithadhoo, 76 hectares in Maradhoo and Maradhoo-Feydhoo, and 32.3 hectares in Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo. Notably, 25 hectares were earmarked for the development of three islands dedicated to resorts, and an additional five hectares were reclaimed in Hankede. The project is currently in its early stages, with the government targeting the completion of the development of Hankede within the next two years.

Speaking to PSM News, Mayor of Addu City Ali Nizar confirmed the completion of land reclamation in September and the initiation of construction for a shore protection structure around the reclaimed area. He highlighted the ongoing efforts to prepare a comprehensive land use plan, adding that the project will be contracted for timely completion.

With a population exceeding 20,000 residents, the primary objectives of the land reclamation project in Addu are to alleviate housing issues and stimulate economic growth in the region.
