National Occupational Safety and Health Conference 2023 kicks off

The first-ever National Occupational Safety and Health Conference 2023 has kicked off in the Maldives with the primary objective of promoting awareness and ensuring the well-being and safety of workers.

The one-day conference was organised by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) in collaboration with the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) supported by the World Health Organisation (WHO). The conference was also attended by the Maldives Ports Limited (MPL), ministries, and the Maldives National University (MNU). The aim of the conference is to raise awareness among the society to ensure the health and safety of employees in the Maldives, striving to establish workplaces as secure environments.

Speaking to PSM News, General Manager of Occupational Health and Safety at MACL Mohamed Abdulla highlighted the conference's focus on diverse aspects, covering informative sessions. He clarified the concept of the safety management system, detailing the positive transformations expected for businesses. He also delved into workplace stress experienced by employees, shedding light on the progress achieved in enhancing employee health and safety.

Moreover, Mohamed highlighted the need for policies and national guidelines to ensure the safety of workers. He cast doubts about achieving safety and health objectives in the Maldives without the backing of laws and regulations. He also advocated for the introduction of legislation and the formulation of a law to safeguard the health and well-being of workers in the country.
