President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu is expected to begin the Fushidhiggaru Falhu reclamation project within 100 days. The plan was revealed in the book containing his roadmap for the first 100 days in office.
The Week-14 Roadmap consists of eight sections with 161 pledges. The sections include Freedom and Sovereignty, Islam and Nationalism, Housing and Infrastructure Development, Economy and Environment, as well as Women, Youth, Arts and Sports. They also include Healthy and Compassionate Society, Education and Training, and Government Policy and Legal Reform.
President-elect Muizzu's most ambitious plan to solve the housing crisis in the Greater Male' Region is the Fushidhiggaru project, which involves the reclamation of 1,280 hectares in Fushidhiggaru Falhu and the allocation of 11,000 land plots and 20,000 flats from the area, which would be connected via a bridge and the high-speed ferry service. He has allocated USD26 million for the project in the 2024 state budget.
The roadmap shows that President-elect Muizzu is expected to begin the reclamation project within 100 days of assuming office. His 100th day in office would be reached in February 2024.
Other projects in the roadmap include the formulation of a trust fund framework for the Gedhoruveriya housing scheme and commencing the fieldwork of a new housing project for those living in the Sinamale' and Male' Hiyaa flats. It also includes reducing the monthly payments for flats and rowhouses allocated for basic housing in the atolls.
Additionally, President-elect Muizzu's manifesto includes the formulation and publication of a policy on soft loans at 5% interest to provide housing. It also includes the establishment of a special social housing category for employees in the tourism industry and the establishment of a housing application portal designed to provide immediate information on the status of applications upon submission of housing applications. The new administration also plans to draft and propose an amendment bill for the Land Act in its first 100 days.
