President says work begins to reduce tariff on fish exports to Türkiye

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the administration is actively pursuing a solution to reduce tariffs on fish exports to Türkiye. He announcement during a media briefing upon his return to Velana International Airport (VIA) after concluding official visits to Turkey and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu held meetings with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and senior government officials during his visit to Türkiye.

Highlighting key achievements from his visit to Türkiye, President Dr. Muizzu mentioned the signing of a crucial agreement aimed at boosting trade and commerce between the two nations. He further noted that the volume of trade between the Maldives and Türkiye is expected to double within the coming year.

Providing details on the discussions held with Turkish officials, the president revealed that efforts are underway to secure an exception for the Maldives, thereby reducing the high tariff rates currently imposed on fish products exported from the country.

Underscoring the significance of the economic agreement inked during his visit, President Dr. Muizzu highlighted that the enhancement of trade relations, as outlined in the agreement, is already in progress. With assurances from Turkish authorities to streamline investments, the president expressed optimism about attracting increased Turkish investments into the Maldives, particularly in sectors such as tourism.
