President assures land, flats for recipients listed in housing schemes

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has given assurance that individuals listed in the Gedhoruveriya and Binveriya housing schemes, implemented by the previous government, will receive land plots and flats.

Speaking at a press conference at the President's Office, President Dr. Muizzu stated that individuals will not lose their land or flats. He assured that individuals on the list will be granted the property, even if they have not received the official ownership document. In addition, he discussed amendments made by the previous government to land registration regulations. He also noted that if property acquisition occurred irregularly or with false information, the relevant institutions would conduct an investigation and take appropriate action.

In the first round of the housing schemes, 9,001 land plots were allocated under the Binveriya scheme. The previous government also released the final list of recipients for the 4,000 flats in development in Hulhumale' Phase II under the Gedhoruveriya scheme . Although more than 13,000 people were deemed eligible in the flat list, only 4,000 received official documents confirming ownership. However, Ministry of Housing, Land, and Urban Development stated that there are legal questions and issues regarding the flat list.

Concerns and complaints have arisen among many individuals regarding the flats allocated under the previous government's housing project. The matter has been referred to the Anti-Corruption Corporation (ACC), leading to a suspension of flat allocations. The investigation conducted by the ACC revealed that some ineligible individuals were awarded points under the Gedhoruveriya scheme and there were violations of regulations in evaluating application forms. The commission also found instances where parties failed to verify submitted information when it could have been verified.
