MTCC begins development of Eydhafushi harbour

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has commenced the harbour development project in Eydhafushi, Baa Atoll.

MTCC is developing the harbour on the west side of Eydhafushi. The scope of the project involves the construction of 303m quay wall, 371m revetment, 18m concrete bridge, 119m breakwater, and dredging operations of 5,490sqm. The project also includes the installation of harbour lights. The project has been awarded at a cost of USD4 million to be completed within 450 days.

President of the Eydhafushi Island Council Mohamed Fathih expressed his commitment to collaborating with the government to ensure timely project completion. He mentioned plans to formulate plans and regulations for the usage of the harbour following its development.

Additionally, Fathih highlighted existing challenges, including numerous complaints about insufficient space in the current harbour, as well as concerns regarding the absence of designated areas for loading and unloading of goods and for transporting sick individuals.

Notably, the old harbour in Eydhafushi was constructed in 1994 but was destroyed during the 2004 tsunami disaster. Subsequent efforts by both private companies and the government to expand the existing harbour were hindered by space constraints in the area.
