Parliament decides to summon ex-minister Mohamed Aslam

The Parliament Petitions Committee has decided to summon Former Minister of National Planning, Housing, and Infrastructure, Mohamed Aslam, to appear before the Parliament. The decision was made in response to a motion put forth by Parliamentarian Hassan Ahmed during a committee meeting focused on a petition opposing the cancellation of the list of recipients for flats released under the Gedhouveriyaa Housing Scheme.

During the meeting, the committee decided to call upon not only former minister Aslam but also Minister of Housing, Land, and Urban Development Dr. Ali Haidar Ahmed, ministry officials, and Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) representatives to appear before Parliament at the earliest upcoming committee meeting.

The meeting was attended by Former Minister of State for National Planning, Housing, and Infrastructure Akram Kamaluddeen, and former Senior Executive Director of the Ministry of National Planning, Housing, and Infrastructure Mohamed Arif. They were questioned about the progress of the Gedhoruveriya Housing scheme.

Additionally, both former and current senior officials from the Housing Ministry were also summoned to the meeting and provided insights. The investigation of ACC into the Gedhoruveriya scheme has identified corruption during the previous government's implementation, including awarding more points allocation and false claims about residence locations.

The announcement of the permanent list of flat recipients on November 5 led to over 7,000 complaints about the allocation process. Subsequently, the ACC instructed the previous government's planning ministry to investigate the flat list and halt the handover on November 15. As such, the current government has delayed the flat handover, awaiting the completion of the the commission's investigation.
