Gov't urges businesses to sell onions at fair prices

The Ministry of Economic Development and Trade has assured that the Maldives will not face any challenges in obtaining onions and urged businesses to refrain from selling onions at high prices.

In a press statement, the ministry clarified that while India has temporarily halted onion exports to select countries due to adverse weather conditions, there are no measures in place to stop the supply of onions to the Maldives. The ministry has also engaged in discussions with various importers that assured the steady import of onions into the Maldives.

Additionally, the ministry conducted a price survey involving 23 different businesses, revealing a surge in onion prices by 20-50% on November 10 compared to the same date last year. The ministry stated that there are no difficulties in importing onions and other essential commodities into the Maldives and guaranteed that the government would provide a suitable solution in the event of any challenges in importing essential goods. Therefore, the ministry urged businesses not to increase onion prices in a manner that inconveniences the public.
